Detailed description
Picture "Reflections 2" (2021)
The present edition by Alex Katz is based on his painting "Reflection" from 2020. The artist, who is known for floral and landscape motifs in addition to his portraits, divides the pictorial space horizontally in the middle and mirrors the motif of the upper half once again in the lower half. Katz sketches a section of shore in fleeting brushstrokes, which does not want to be a realistic rendering of a concrete place, but rather a fleeting impression.
It shows a lonely hut on a beach or lake, surrounded by vegetation that appears to be tropical. Katz leaves it to our own imagination to picture the exact place. Each of us is encouraged to interpret our own individual place of longing into the depiction. A warm and, as it were, diffuse light thus merely illuminates the reflection of a familiar place from our memory.
The title of the picture is thus ambiguous - it refers to the reflection of the landscape in the water and to the reflection of a place that exists only in our imagination.
Original carbon print, 2021. Edition: 100 copies on paper, numbered and hand-signed. Motif size/sheet size 119 x 100 cm. Size in frame 123.5 x 104.5 cm as shown.

About Alex Katz
Alex Katz (born in 1927 in New York) is considered one of the most important artists of our time. His large-format paintings are characterised by their simplified, colour-intensive style, which the artist developed in the 1950s in opposition to the prevailing Abstract Expressionism. Today they are almost synonymous with his work.
Important motifs in his œuvre are flowers. The intensive examination of simplified form, light reflection and colour composition is the artist's main focus, rather than specific statements.
Alex Katz has been honoured several times for his work, which is represented in numerous renowned collections, including the collection of the MoMA and the Whitney Museum in New York, the Tate Britain in London and the collection of the Museum Brandhorst in Munich.
